General Operating Mechanic

Role and Scope of Position:
Under general supervision, performs heavy physical work indoors and outdoors, at times under adverse weather conditions, and /or for extended periods and is subject to overtime work and call outs. Diagnoses and repairs trouble relating to normal assignment and performs unusual work where no standard methods or specific directions are available. Operates construction equipment. Performs complex rigging and complex shoring as required. Installs complete piping and underground systems from plans and drawings. Makes all measurements and calculation including layouts using the necessary devices, such as levels, transits, etc. Has a thorough knowledge and makes application as required of the Company's Safety rules and procedures.
Has the opportunity to assume the responsibility for maintaining work performance and safe work practices of others working under his or her direction.
Performs the duties included in the Time Merit Progression Program for General Operating Mechanic.
Essential Functions:
Recognizes limitations of and is responsible for the proper use and maintenance of materials, instruments, tools and equipment assigned to his or her use.
Prepares and maintains accurate records, related to job assignments, such as time and material records.
Makes all measurements and calculations including layouts, as required by assignments, using the necessary devices, such as levels, transits, etc.
Interpret plans, specifications and drawings.
Fabricates, frames and erects with contemporary materials, such as plastic, metal, wood, plywood, etc.
Performs concrete forming, reinforcing installation and interior and exterior finish work.
Has a practical knowledge of soil conditions, such as footing and shoring requirements for safe construction practices.
Performs masonry tasks as required.
Operates construction equipment.
Performs cutting with acetylene torch and welding as required.
Installs conduit; set templates for bends at given locations and install bends.
Runs direct burial cable as required in Substation Construction and counterpoise installation.
Installs grounding and connections.
Performs complex riggings and shoring as required.
Familiar with switching and tagging.
Performs carpentry work incidental to assignment such as staging, small forms, crating, door and shed repairs, etc.
Assembles, installs or dismantles structures and staging as related to his or her normal assignment.
Constructs subway vaults and underground systems.
Climbing ladders and working at heights.
Operates vehicles requiring a CDL A license. Participates in safety meetings as required.
Maintains open communications with Chief General Operating Mechanic and supervision. Trains others.
May be required to work extended hours in times of emergencies. Daily Work Responsibilities: Morning Job Briefing This position is four tens with Friday off.

Technical Knowledge/SkiII/Education/Licenses/Certifications:
Completion of the Time Merit Progression program for General Operating Mechanic;
Must possess a normal degree of dexterity in the use of tools and equipment;
Acquires a thorough knowledge and understanding or Employee Safely Manual and performs work in conformance with safe practices and Company standards;
Understanding of and ability to properly and safely utilize various tools and equipment required to perform assigned tasks;
The ability to learn and utilize available information technologies; Maintain CDL A License and a clean driving record.
- Education: High School Diploma or Equivalent, Additional formal education preferred.
- Experience: Four years construction or equivalent work.

The employee is required to walk; use hands and fingers to operate, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee may be required to drive for extended hours during a typical work day;
Climbs and performs work from heights including ladders, lifts, mezzanines, etc., without adverse effects such as motion sickness or dizziness;
The employee must be able to lift and or move 50-100 pounds.
