Telecom Specialist A - Network Services

This is a high-level position that works within the various system test and technical service departments (Substation Automation; Distribution Automation; Radio Services; Network Services; Central Maintenance Services) requiring thorough understanding of applicable electronic systems and operating platforms. Handles technical assignments associated with acceptance testing, maintenance, and/or repair of various communications systems. This includes various communications platforms, process computers, peripheral hardware and various electronic components and devices. Responsible for compliance and maintenance of Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) systems.

Applicants must successfully pass the TECH test.

Essential Functions: 

  • Troubleshoots, repairs, and returns to service telecommunication equipment and systems. Performs acceptance, installation, or post-installation tests on new or newly installed telemetry equipment.
  • Analyzes and interprets test results; provides recommendations to engineering, operating, maintenance, and other personnel, based on hardware characteristics or performance. Recommends operations changes for equipment to enhance system reliability when applicable.
  • Reads and interprets engineering drawings such as schematics, wiring, logic and interconnections diagrams and updates with field changes.
  • Provides input to reports, drawings, sketches, logs, and records of work performed.
  • Provides technical expertise, advice, and support to engineering, construction, and other personnel as required.
  • Assists with the maintenance of various systems, web pages and/or databases.
  • Creates and develops test documents to guide users of electronic equipment and/or systems.
  • Identifies and provides advice on the need for major repairs or outside technical assistance.
  • Creates, troubleshoots, and modifies database configurations for programmable electronic devices and systems.
  • Responsible for compliance and maintenance of Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) systems and must maintain annual CIP certification.
  • May assist with training and educating other test personnel.
  • Must be available for on-call hours and during emergency restoration as required.

Network Services:

  • Works independently on technical assignments associated with the acceptance testing, maintenance, or repair of Synchronous Optical Network (SONET) terminals, digital microwave terminals and systems, mobile VSAT and portable satellite communication systems, TDM Digital Access Cross-connect systems, Frame Relay Access Devices (FRADs), TDM Multiplexers and channel banks, MPLS switches, carrier Ethernet, fiber optic test and splicing equipment, point to multipoint SCADA communications, monitoring and alarm systems, Telecom-based RFI investigations, personal computers and peripheral hardware, and various electronic systems, components, and devices.
  • Demonstrates expertise with the use of serial and network analyzer tools to monitor or diagnose TDM bit streams, frame relay communications, SCADA, VOIP, MPLS and other packet-based systems.
  • Fabricates electrical or electronic circuitry to accomplish specialize functions or tests; performs fiber-optic fusion splicing; designs, recommends and/or installs modifications to electrical or electronic systems or devices.
  • Works effectively with other technical disciplines to maintain proper operation of interdependent systems.

Qualifications:

Technical Knowledge/Skill:

  • Thorough technical understanding of electrical and electronic components, circuitry, and systems, and ability to maintain up-to-date knowledge of state-of-the-art developments in these fields.
  • Skill and dexterity in repair, adjustment, and modification of electronic, microelectronics, and delicate electromechanical components, circuitry, and systems.
  • Knowledge of specialized instrumentation, use, and application; thorough working knowledge of electrical and electronic testing and measurement techniques.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to effectively communicate technical information.
  • Familiarity with pertinent regulatory requirements.
  • Full understanding of Eversource safety rules and practices.
  • Thorough knowledge of computer systems and applicable software.

Education:

  • Associates Degree in electrical engineering; electrical technology or equivalent.                         

Experience:   

  • A minimum of six (6) years of related experience.                           

Licenses & Certifications:

  • Critical Infrastructure Protection certification must be maintained annually.
  • Must maintain a valid motor vehicle operator’s license. CDL is preferred.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Eversource offers a competitive total rewards program.  The annual salary range for this position is $99,970.00to $111,080.00, plus incentive.  Salary is commensurate with your experience.  Check out the career site for an overview of benefits.

Working Conditions:

  • Must be available to work emergency restoration assignment as required.
  • Must be available to travel between MA/CT/NH as necessary.
