Role and Scope of Position: 

  • Be an active member of the Eversource Safety Leadership Team that defines and implements the company’s safety strategic and management systems. 
  • Leads a safety team that serves as the strategic and technical safety partner of the Eversource Gas Utility Teams and Unions.  Gas includes all Distribution, Engineering, Clean Technologies, and Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) field and fixed operations located within Connecticut and Massachusetts.
  • Position is responsible for occupational safety requirements (i.e. OSHA) and will work collaboratively with the Gas Pipeline Safety Team.    
  • Leverages Human and Organizational Performance (HOP) to foster collaborative working relationships and drive continuous improvement. 
  • Facilitates and leads initiatives that integrate safety into the way we work to ensure compliance with applicable safety regulations, promote safety engagement, identify and safeguard against workplace hazards, and maintain an environment where safety is first and always.

Essential Functions: 

  • Collaborates with and influences the development of the corporate safety direction and implementation of safety specific strategies, policies and procedures designed to improve safety performance and drive safety first and always.
  • Subject matter expert in Gas Utilities with a proven ability to maintain operational compliance.
  • Directs the activities of the field safety staff and works closely with all operating management to ensure a safe and healthy workplace for all employees. 
  • Interprets regulatory requirements and in conjunction with operating managers, determines the methods required to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Partners with leadership to analyze data, develop improvement plans, and improve metrics by reducing operational hazards and risks. 
  • Oversees investigations of all work-related incidents and accidents to determine causes and implement measures to prevent recurrence. 
  • Establishes and maintains a positive relationship with regulatory authorities and represents the corporation in all safety-related legal proceedings.
  • Participates in federal and state regulatory rule making processes to ensure the interests of the corporation are addressed.
  • Establishes and maintains a positive relationship with union represented employees through Joint Safety Committees and interaction with Union Leadership.
  • Benchmarks and partners with industry peers to learn and advance safety at Eversource while supporting industry safety progress.
  • Understands OSHA Process Safety Management (PSM) requirements and principles. 
  • Serves as a key member of the company’s Emergency Response Program.  Must be available during emergency events.
  • Other duties, as assigned.

Technical Knowledge/Skill/Education/Licenses/Certifications:

Technical Knowledge/Skill:

  • Extensive knowledge of OSHA regulations and requirements.
  • Working knowledge of a Gas Utility.
  • Working knowledge of Process Safety Management (PSM).
  • Educated on Human and Organizational Performance (HOP).
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written), interpersonal, management, negotiation and presentation skills. 
  • Strong analytical and research skills.
  • Ability to use PC desktop applications (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point).

Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Safety, Engineering or related discipline.  MBA or advance degree preferred

Experience:   

  • Twelve (12) or more years of safety related experience, preferably managing safety programs in a gas operations environment.

Licenses & Certifications:

  • None

Working Conditions:

  • Must be available to work emergency storm assignment as required.
  • Must be available to travel between MA/CT/NH as necessary.
  • Work is performed primarily in an office environment which requires sitting, standing and climbing stairs.

Mental Aspects:

  • Work includes analyzing, consulting, designing, implementing, presenting, leading, and coordinating.
  • This role works in an environment that often requires the performance of multiple simultaneous activities, where deadlines need to be met and work is performed under pressure while involving significant business commitments and results.
