Manager, Transmission System Operations

Locations: Dorchester, Massachusetts

This position is jointly accountable, with other Electric Operations Managers, for providing safe, reliable and cost-effective electric service to customers. Responsible for coordinating operation of the transmission system in conjunction with ISO-NE and in compliance with Reliability Standards. This position oversees system staff at energy management/service centers on a 24 hour, 7-day per week basis. This position also requires frequent off-hour interactions with staff and other stakeholders.

Essential Functions: 

  • Assists with the establishment of, and monitors, goals, policies, plans, standards, performance objectives and budget for the operation of the Transmission System.  Analyzes and recommends resource levels to plan, develop and implement policies and practices.  Monitors operating and financial objectives and ensures alignment with organization and corporate goals.
  • Develops Electric Control Room and Outage Coordination staff.  Implements programs to ensure employees possess technical and behavioral skills required to support operating plans.  Manages, selects, coaches and develops staff.
  • Coordinates system restoration efforts in collaboration with ISO-NE.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of best practices and Human and Organizational Performance objectives to achieve efficient and safe transmission and distribution system operations and dispatch.  Assists in the planning and implementation of technological enhancements for the Energy Management Centers.
  • Monitors system conditions and loading, outage coordination, switching and tagging activities, associated work authorizations, and event notification and reporting.
  • Communicates with customers, communities, executives and other stakeholders in regards to system conditions and restoration efforts.
  • Manages the Electric System Emergency Preparedness activities jointly with other Electric Operations managers, including operating, tagging and work practices and standards.
  • Manages a team of Supervisors, Operations Engineers, System Operators, and Outage Coordinators.
  • Responsible for safe and reliable operations of the Transmission System, following all Eversource and ISO-NE procedures including NPCC and NERC requirements.
  • Coordinates the Transmission outage scheduling to ensure reliable operations of the Bulk Power System.
  • Conducts contingency studies and load flows to evaluate system limitations and risks.

Qualifications:

Technical Knowledge/Skill:

  • Requires a comprehensive understanding of the Company’s transmission and substation infrastructure. 
  • Requires knowledge of Transmission System associated processes, procedures and computer systems. 
  • Also requires knowledge of NERC Standards and Requirements, ISO- NE operations, power system load flows and contingency studies.

Education:

  • Requires a Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering, related discipline or equivalent experience. 
  • MS in Engineering or MBA preferred.                         

Experience:   

  • Minimum of ten (10) years managing and maintaining transmission/substation systems. 
  • Supervisory experience is preferred. 
  • Demonstrated experience in working and communicating across functional boundaries.                           

Licenses & Certifications:

  • NERC certification (TOP certification or higher) or ability to obtain in six (6) months.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Eversource offers a competitive total rewards program.  The annual salary range for this position is $160,700.00 to $178,560.00, plus incentive.  Salary is commensurate with your experience.  Check out the career site for an overview of benefits.

Working Conditions:

  • Must be available to work emergency restoration assignment as required.
  • Must be available to travel between MA/CT/NH as necessary.
  • Manages a workforce that operates on a 24 hour, 7 day per week basis. 
  • Attends to problems in off-hours and for extended periods.
