The Lead Engineer, Level 1 is responsible for the development, expansion, planning, design, maintenance, and operation of the system and its equipment to meet the mission and objectives of the organization. In addition, this position coordinates the evaluation of system failures, and the appropriate resolutions, in order to provide support to operations on unplanned maintenance. The Lead Engineer, Level 1 is responsible for ensuring that the Eversource transmission and distribution systems are designed to high quality standards that provide customers with safe, reliable, competitively priced and environmentally sound electric service. This position shares accountability with peers in the strategy, development, and design of the organization’s Life Cycle Plan, a comprehensive long-term plan for the transmission/distribution system. Responsible for helping Lead Engineers with overseeing, assigning, prioritizing, and directing the work performed by other Engineers and staff.
Essential Functions:
Assigns, prioritizes, and directs work performed by Outsourced Engineering firms across the Tristate territory.
Responsible for the cost and performance of certain assets on the system which may include reliability analysis and trending of system events and monitoring of equipment condition.
Responsible for the development, justification, and approval of the Life Cycle Plan activities over a multi-year horizon and for ongoing projects
Ensures that the design and specification of additions, modifications and replacements to the transmission and distribution systems, and the preparation of system electrical permits and related customer notifications, are completed accurately and on time.
Responsible for the development of conceptual engineering designs and the details, as necessary.
Collaborates with other Engineers within Engineering to ensure consistency and teamwork.
Responsible for mentoring and coaching other engineers, will serve as a point of contact for escalations, and will lead team members as required.
Provides technical support and direction to operating areas relative to system priorities, engineering guidelines and operating decisions during normal and emergency situations.
Accountable for root-cause analysis, development and implementation of corrective actions.
Responsible for the evaluation and selection of technology and equipment for the system.
Responsible for the development of standards and procedures for design, operation and maintenance.
Responsible for the design of interconnection generation request (Solar, Wind, Fossil, Nuclear, Battery) into existing (brownfield) substations, as well as construction of new (greenfield) substations thru conceptual design
Responsible for upgrading substation equipment to allow the connection of Distributed Generated Resources (DER) to the electrical grid
Supports Principal Engineers and Management in preparation of corporate testimony and written responses for rate cases and other local, state or federal regulatory proceedings.
Supports Principal Engineers and Management to present project alternatives and scope details during Solution Design Committee (SDC) and Eversource Project Approval Committee (EPAC) meetings
Conducts engineering and related studies; completes non-routine engineering projects with minimal oversight with the ability to independently manage project schedules and interfaces; Possesses and applies the fundamental engineering concepts, practices and procedures; proficient in technical and analytical competencies necessary to handle assignments of increasing complexity.
Expected to assist with storm duty and any other major events.
Technical Knowledge/Skill/Education/Licenses/Certifications:

Knowledge of utility power systems is preferred
Ability to independently develop, present and execute new projects through collaborations with other departments.
Familiarity with power related software is preferred.
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (EE) or Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) required.
Experience: Minimum of five (5) to eight (8) years of Substation Engineering or related electric utility experience is required.

Working Conditions:
Must be available to work emergency restoration assignment as required.
Must be available to travel between MA/CT/NH as necessary.
Depending on the specific nature of the engineering role, position may require occasional to significant travel by car. A valid driver’s license is required.
