The Associate Analyst, Climate plays an essential role on the Sustainability Team with a focus on producing and maintaining a high-quality greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory, advancing the Company’s emission reduction goals and contributing to a best-in-class climate program. With Eversource’s ambitious goals to reduce GHG emissions and achieve related goals aligned with the state policies and regulations in the region, this position will be responsible for consolidating source data, completing calculations both manually and using GHG management software consistent with the GHG Protocol and industry best practices, performing robust data quality checks, effectively managing complex datasets, and assisting with the reporting of this data internally and externally to stakeholders. By engaging functional groups across the organization, this role will support the continuous improvement of our GHG data collection processes and controls in an effort to optimize efficiencies and data integrity.
The Associate Climate Analyst will also play a key role in strategic climate management projects such as coordinating with dedicated working groups to plan and execute emission reduction projects, conducting climate scenario assessments, developing low carbon transition plans, and maintaining our GHG Inventory Management Plan and other documentation. This position will also support the preparation of climate data and information for key disclosures such as Eversource’s annual Sustainability Report, an enterprise-wide Climate Adaptation and Mitigation Plan, and ESG rater responses such as MSCI, Sustainalytics, TCFD, CDP, and others. This position will play an integral role in advancing Eversource’s industry-leading sustainability initiatives and ensuring the Company maintains a strong position as a climate leader.
This is a hybrid role. The first three months are fulltime in the office.
Essential Functions
- Work cross-functionally to gather and analyze data, complete calculations and validations using spreadsheet-based and GHG management software-based methods, and maintain a robust database for Eversource’s GHG inventory
- Maintain comprehensive process documentation including a GHG Inventory Management Plan
- Identify opportunities and lead the execution of streamlining data processing, validation, and disclosures
- Support the development, adoption, and maintenance of software and tools that support the management of GHG data and relevant reports and dashboards that track performance
- Synthesize and visualize data to show trends and key performance updates for presentations to key internal and external audiences to influence decision making
- Track progress toward GHG goals and collaborate with other teams to identify and support the execution of GHG reduction projects consistent with corporate goals and objectives
- Support the execution of strategic climate initiatives such as scenario analyses and low carbon transition plans
- Participate in and present to internal working groups on emission reduction initiatives, metrics tracking, and other projects
- Support the publication and ongoing maintenance of Eversource’s Climate Adaptation and Mitigation Plan
- Contribute to the development of our annual sustainability report and other climate disclosures including those for key ESG raters
- Manage the data preparation and submission for compliance with regulatory reporting obligations such as the Boston Emissions Reduction and Disclosure Ordinance (BERDO) and Large Building Energy Reporting (LBER) in Massachusetts
- Monitor evolving GHG, climate and sustainability trends, regulatory requirements, and external rating entity expectations
- Research and understand developments in climate target frameworks and GHG validation initiatives for potential adoption
- Support other sustainability efforts within the team as needed
Qualifications
Technical Knowledge/Skill:
- Firm understanding of the GHG Protocol accounting standards and experience applying this guidance in a real-world GHG inventory including execution of emissions calculations using activity data and standardized emissions factors
- Exceptional analytical skills including experience with data management and applications such as Excel, Tableau, and/or programming languages to manage complex databases
- Understanding of climate change issues at it relates to the energy sector, policies, GHG accounting, emission reduction goals such as net zero and science-aligned targets, and financing mechanisms to enable emission-reduction initiatives
- Strong work ethic, with dedication to delivering high quality work products and showing enthusiasm for continuous improvement
- Highly effective in collaborating with others including through cross-functional teams in a fast-paced environment
- Demonstrated time management skills and the ability to prioritize and communicate on competing priorities
- Ability to effectively synthesize and visualize data to show key results and trends in visually compelling and easy-to-understand formats for presentations
- Interest in broader sustainability concepts and their application in the business environment, ideally in the energy sector
- Understanding of key ESG raters and sustainability/climate disclosure expectations including but not limited to CDP, SASB, GRI, MSCI, Sustainalytics
- Excellent problem-solving skills and exceptional attention to detail
- Strong written, verbal, and presentation skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft applications, especially Excel, PowerPoint, and Word
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, Policy, Engineering, Economics, Business or other related field with a sustainability focus, or equivalent experience.
- Master’s degree preferred.
Experience:
- One (1) plus years of experience conducting similar climate and sustainability work, preferably in the energy utility sector.
