Job Description

Associate Engineer, Protection and Controls (Compliance Standards and Support) - Hybrid

03/28/2025

Locations: Manchester, New Hampshire

This is a hybrid role.  The first three months are fulltime in the office.

Protection and Controls is responsible for the design and operation of protection and control systems necessary for the safe and reliable operation of the transmission and distribution system. Protective relaying is a vital part of any electric power system and is very important during trouble faults and abnormal disturbances. If a fault were to occur, protective relaying initiates the disconnection of the trouble area while operation and service in the rest of the system continue.

The P&C Associate Engineer is responsible for completing activities and assignments related to the compliance, standardization and support for protective relays and associated systems for the transmission and distributions system.  P&C engineers also apply specialized knowledge to provide innovative solutions to emerging industry issues. Compliance activities include the completion of NERC, NPCC and ISO-NE compliance tasks.  Standardization activities include the development, review, implementation and rollout of transmission and distribution P&C standard documentation such as design drawings, philosophies and relay setting calculation files.  The support activities include short circuit studies, short circuit modeling, analysis of protection system operations and system failures, along with appropriate resolutions, to provide support to operations on unplanned maintenance.

Essential Functions:

  • Complete periodic compliance activities undertaken are in accordance with NERC, NPCC and ISO-NE requirements.

  • Support the development of standards and procedures for compliance of the transmission and distribution protections systems in accordance with existing and future NERC, NPCC and ISO-NE requirements.

  • Support the development of standards and procedures for operation and maintenance of the transmission and distribution system.

  • Modify and maintain Short Circuit models and provide periodic updates in accordance with NERC and ISO-NE requirements

  • Support short circuit coordination studies by modeling and analyzing electric system elements and their protection systems using fault simulation software

  • Analysis of disturbance events, development, and implementation of corrective actions

  • Provides technical support and direction to operating areas relative to system priorities, engineering guidelines and operating decisions during normal and emergency situations.

  • Complete work activities associated with development, review, and periodic update of control center operating procedures

  • Develops infrastructure strategy, operating philosophy, and technical basis for asset renewal decisions and communicates that information to Asset Management for project justification and financial rationing.

  • Complete work activities associated with the System Planning group to provide design guidance and protections system performance details necessary for planning studies.

  • Support work activities associated with the Interconnections group and Distributed Generation Group to provide design review and guidance for new transmission and distribution interconnection requests.

  • Collaborates with other groups within Eversource Engineering to ensure consistency and teamwork.

  • Actively support storm and/or emergency restoration assignments.

  • Experience performing overcurrent and distance coordination studies with ASPEN Oneliner modeling software or equivalent.

  • Experience performing post event analysis using relay and digital fault recorder event records

  • Experience with the design and installation of protection and control schemes

  • Thorough knowledge of  transmission and distribution protective relaying principles and methodologies

  • Ability to succeed independently or in a team environment.
