Associate Engineer, Transmission Line & Civil Engineering (Hybrid Schedule)

The Associate Engineer will support rapid scoping of Eversource Transmission Line modifications and upgrades required by proposed third party generation projects. To scope a project, the successful candidate will read system impact studies provided by ISO New England, review site plans provided by the interconnecting party, and review existing Eversource computer models, inspection photographs, drawings and other records in order to evaluate required system modifications. The successful candidate may also function in a similar role in support of Eversource strategic development projects requiring Transmission line upgrades or modifications.
Some exposure to the design, construction, maintenance and operation of Transmission Lines on the Eversource System in Connecticut and Western Massachusetts (CT/WMA) will be given. This will build familiarity with design codes, theories, and the relevant software packages. Specific duties include: design and analysis of overhead transmission lines, design of line supporting structures, foundation designs, clearance evaluations, development of documentation for regulatory and siting agencies (including drawings, reports, interrogatory responses, etc.), representation of Transmission Line and Civil Engineering (TL&CE) in industry, legal and regulatory proceedings, and other duties as required. This position will report to a CT/WMA Massachusetts Overhead Lead Engineer of Transmission Line & Civil Engineering.

Eversource supports work-life balance by offering hybrid schedules for certain roles. Eligibility is based on job responsibilities, operational needs, nature ofworkand team dynamics. Current guidelines require employees to work at least three days in the office, including Tuesdays and Wednesdays, with the third day set by the employee and supervisor based on department needs. These guidelines apply to roles approved for remote work and are subject tochange,  basedon managerial discretion and work performance. All applicants must be able towork up to five days in the office if needed (for example: emergencies, training, or other business needs) or should the policy change.

Support of Interconnection and Strategic Projects:

  • Support in drafting documents for the initiation of projects including estimates, project justifications and scopes, full project initiation submittals, drawings, photographs, etc.
  • Coordinate with Eversource Substation Engineering, Eversource Interconnections, generation developers and other stakeholders to produce consistent and constructible interconnection designs.
  • Support of conceptual and preliminary design of overhead transmission line upgrades or modifications using PLS-CADD and associated software.
  • Development and oversight of design details, specifications, material lists, drawing packages to be issued for procurement of transmission materials and construction of transmission facilities.
  • Support the documentation of newly constructed or modified Transmission Line facilities.

Support of Maintenance and Operations groups at Eversource Energy:

  • Support the maintenance and operation of Transmission Line facilities on the Eversource System with engineering analysis
  • Review external uses of Eversource rights-of-way against Eversource Standards
  • Analyze data from the field about the condition of Transmission Line Assets and provide technical guidance regarding replacement and/or remediation.
  • Assist other organizations within Eversource with information and guidance regarding transmission facilities.  These groups can include (but are not limited to): Plant Accounting, Transmission Asset Management, Real Estate, Legal, Regulatory Policy & Planning, Governmental Affairs, Customer Service, etc.
  • Support Eversource Transmission Line design, construction, and maintenance standards revisions and development, in accordance with revisions to the National Electrical Safety Code, ISO New England Planning Procedure documents, and other regulatory documents

Technical Knowledge/Skill:

  • Knowledge of Transmission Line & Engineering civil, structural and electrical concepts
  • Familiarity with Transmission Line Construction techniques
  • Familiarity with the National Electrical Safety Code (”NESC”) and the Massachusetts DPU Code (per Chapter 220, Commonwealth of Massachusetts Regulations Section 125).
  • Knowledge of the guidance in AISC Steel Manual, ACI Building Code and Commentary
  • Familiarity with PLS-CADD and its associated suite of software products, Microsoft Office, Sag10, L-Pile, MathCAD
  • A combination of strong technical knowledge and business acumen.
  • Understanding of the Federal and New England Regulatory environment and the impact for the Transmission Business.
  • Ability to interpret and analyze financial documents.
  • Working knowledge of information technology and use of Eversource’s office automation and information systems.
  • Ability to enhance internal and external customer satisfaction.
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to write concise but informative project scopes useful for cost estimation by others. This also requires the ability to translate technical information into terms that are meaningful to the audience.
  • Ability to develop and use collaborative relationships to facilitate the accomplishment of work goals.

Education:      A Bachelor’s degree in engineering is required.  A civil or mechanical engineering degree is preferred. 

Experience:0-3 years related experience is required. Experience in the technical, operational or engineering aspects of the electric utility industry is strongly preferred.

Licenses & Certifications:    A valid driver’s license.
