Transmission Underground Mechanic Helper
Role and Scope of Position:
Performs underground transmission line maintenance and inspection work that require knowledge of the construction standards and work procedures including (cable maintenance manuals, M8-MT-2017, UTRM077, E.M.P. 6.59E). Performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks associated with the maintenance, repair and inspection of Connecticut and Western Massachusetts underground transmission lines. Performing all the duties included in the Time Merit Progression Program for Underground Transmission Mechanic.
The salary range for this position starts at $39.65 and progresses in accordance with the union contract. Check out the career site for an overview of benefits.
Essential Functions:
- Inspects existing underground transmission construction work for any defects, damage or abnormalities in the cables, pipes, terminations, transition structures, valves, racking system, manhole frames, manhole covers, manhole cover suppression systems and grounding systems associated with transmission lines and other associated underground transmission equipment.
- Inspects existing bridge crossing pipes for any defects or damages associated with the hanger system or pipes.
- Performs maintenance on racking systems to include changing cable clamps, racking arms and Lally columns, also maintenance on the grounding systems to include copper wiring, ground clamps, surge volt limiters and link boxes.
- Installs and maintains high temperature tapes and link seals on High Pressure Fluid Filled (HPFF) pipes. Performs and evaluates pipe wall thickness testing.
- Installs carbon fiber wrapping systems to restore damaged or corroded pipes.
- Performs Dissolve Gas Analysis (DGA) samplings at terminations, trifucators and splice valves.
- Supports and assists Eversource employees and contractors with maintenance and emergent work on the underground transmission system.
- Monitors contractors and other utilities while digging over, under and around transmission duct banks and pipes to ensure no damage or encroachment to the transmission lines, NESC and Eversource’s Clearance requirements for underground transmission lines to the Company’s satisfaction.
- Monitors and evaluates Call Before You Dig (CBYD) and Dig Safe Tickets, contacts individuals that are out of compliance with Transmission requirements and provide them with the proper information to comply.
- Respond to Emergency Call Outs.
- Checking, inspecting, and testing underground system and maintaining equipment.
- New Hires must successfully complete the TMP for Underground Transmission Mechanic.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid CDL license.
- Must obtain and maintain Switching and Tagging certification.
- Must be able to enter manholes using various lengths of ladders
- Must be able to lift 75 pounds
- Must be able to use various aerial devices (et bucket trucks, lift platforms
- Applicates must pass an agility test
Education: High School Diploma or Equivalent, Additional formal education preferred
Experience:
Must have 2 years of electrical experience and/or related mechanical/technical experience. Splicing experience is preferred.
Must have a work history that demonstrates safe work habits.
Must pass EEI testing (CAST test) and successful completion of a technical/behavioral interview and an agility assessment.
