Substation Automation Technician
05/29/2025Locations: East Berlin, Connecticut
The Individual will be involved with the testing, installation, commissioning, maintenance, and repair of Substation Automation equipment. Individual will work with Substation Automation work including Remote Terminal Unit (RTU) configuration, Human Machine Interface (HMI) testing and implementation, data concentrator configuration, frame relay setup and configuration, and other automation equipment associated with substations. Individual will also support integrating new automation equipment onto the Substation Automation systems by assisting in identifying opportunities and technologies to solve ongoing problems. The ability to logically troubleshoot technical problems is also required. Individual must have strong computer skills and the ability to operate a variety of computer software programs related to RTU configuration, communications equipment and other related automation equipment; demonstrate teamwork, strong communication skills and be self-motivated. The individual also must ensure that all required work is performed safely, on schedule, cost effectively and in accordance with company standards.
The salary range for this position starts at $38.51 effective June 1st, 2025 and progresses in accordance with the union contract.
Essential Functions:
- Individual will perform technical assignments in support of the testing, installation, and commissioning of automated electric distribution field devices for Eversource.
- Individual will work with various programming languages, i.e. DNP, Modbus, SEL, etc. for field devices to test RTU and device operations including but not limited to: definition of status, control, and measurement points, polling rate, unsolicited event classification
- Individual will install and test design settings for implementation in the field.
- Individual will support lab testing to verify proper design operation prior to field implementation
- Individual will support troubleshooting events related to Substation Automation equipment where field device communication is identified to have mis-operated or Substation Automation related alarms are generated.
- Individual will understand and comply with requirements and standards set forth by industry organizations and protocols such as IEEE, DNP, modbus etc...
- Individual will serve on-call and during emergency restoration efforts as required.
- Technical Knowledge/Skill/Education/Licenses/Certifications:
Technical Knowledge/Skill:
- Understanding of the design, specification, and installation of Substation Automation devices such as RTUs, various relays, reclosers, switches, padmount switchgear, etc…
- Understanding of SCADA engineering concepts, in particular DNP 3.0 protocol
- Communications and presentation skills
- Ability to organize and work within a team to design, install, and commission a project
Education:
- Associates' Degree in Electrical or Electronic engineering or Electrical or Electronic technology, telecommunications engineering, or related discipline.
Experience:
- Zero to three years of experience in engineering, programming, or testing of complex electronic systems. Experience in Energy Delivery or T&D maintenance is preferred. A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required. Understanding of electric distribution systems is strongly preferred
Working Conditions:
- Must be available to work emergency storm assignment as required.
- Must be available to travel between CT/MA as necessary.
- Must be available for On-Call Support
- Company vehicle is provided.
