Our Senior Environmental Internal Auditor will be responsible for executing the environmental audit plan that includes all aspects of internal audit work.  Responsibilities include planning, coordinating, and performing several environmental audits or other assigned tasks concurrently throughout all areas of the Eversource system. Other job duties may include consulting assignments. This position also interfaces with many levels of Eversource management.

Essential Functions:

Under the guidance of the Manager-Internal Audit or Vice President of Internal Audit & Security, the Senior Internal Auditor carries out the following primary duties, with a minimum of supervision.

  • Performing and leading environmental audits.
  • Consulting assignments to work with/assist management in developing solutions to various environmental topics.
  • Appraisals of systems, functions, policies, procedures, and activities, to determine the efficiency and effectiveness of operations and the adequacy of internal control.
  • Assists with directing, counseling, and training other staff assigned to audits, and assists in reviewing their work for quality and accuracy.
  • Determines audit scope and objectives. Discusses scope, objectives, timing, and reporting process with Internal Audit and client management.
  • Develops and documents the audit program and associated audit testing techniques, including interviews with all levels of management and performing compliance and substantive audit tests as detailed in the audit program.
  • Evaluates the adequacy and effectiveness of procedures and internal controls (both manual and electronic) over the area under audit. Also, comments, where appropriate, on the quality of performance relating to the activities under audit.
  • Develops audit findings and presents such findings and recommendations for corrective action to appropriate management personnel at closing conference meetings.
  • Conducts meetings and presentations with management to update progress, communicate audit results, and obtain concurrence with audit recommendations.
  • Prepares the audit report to senior management on assigned projects, with few revisions by Internal Audit management.
  • Assists in the preparation of the Internal Audit Department 's comprehensive environmental risk analysis and annual audit plan of the Eversource system.
  • Participates on various Company or key departmental task forces, committees, special studies, or projects as assigned.
  • Assists in preparation of materials required for Senior Management and/or Audit Committee meetings.

All work is conducted in accordance with The Institute of Internal Auditors International Standards for the Professional Practice of Internal Auditing, the Internal Audit Department Charter, and the Internal Audit Department Manual.

Auditors are expected to demonstrate high ethical standards, maintain an appropriate degree of objectivity, and protect the confidentiality of persons and information.

Qualifications

Technical Knowledge/Skill:

  • Advanced knowledge of environmental laws and regulations and industry standards impacting Eversource (particularly in CT, MA, and NH as well as federal).
  • Advanced knowledge of internal control systems and auditing/consulting concepts, techniques, and principles.
  • Experience working with Microsoft Office products, specifically Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and SharePoint.
  • Basic to advanced knowledge of the utility industry (electric and/or gas).
  • General knowledge of safety laws and regulations, such as OSHA requirements.
  • Ability to stay current with changes to environmental laws and regulations at the state and federal level.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently appraise and analyze complex information, determine facts, assess risk, and make decisions and recommendations accordingly.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct and/or supervise concurrent audits/assignments and to arrive at sound conclusions while under the pressure of time constraints or sensitive situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and work effectively with all levels of the company and with counterparts in outside organizations.
  • Ability to make presentations based on written studies or to present ideas not currently documented.
  • Proficiently write clearly, concisely, and effectively to a variety of audiences and dealing with difficult subject matter (technical and/or sensitive to the reader).
  • Demonstrated ability to document audit work in a clear and organized manner.
  • Flexibility to travel within our service territory to perform assignments.

Education:

Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university. An environmental engineering or environmental science degree is preferred.  Other relevant degrees, together with experience, may be considered in order to provide the Internal Audit activity with a mix of perspectives.   

An advanced degree (i.e., Master of Business Administration - MBA) or certification in an auditing-related discipline (Certified Professional Environmental Auditor – CPEA) is highly desired.

Experience:

A minimum of five years of related environmental audit experience is required.  Some experience (audit or other roles) in the utility industry is strongly preferred. 

Licenses & Certifications:

Must hold a valid motor vehicle driver’s license.

Certified Professional Environmental Auditor (CPEA) preferred.

$106,980.00-$118,870.00
