IT Product Manager - Meter Technologies (Hybrid)

Eversource supports work-life balance by offering hybrid schedules for certain roles. Eligibility is based on job responsibilities, operational needs, nature ofworkand team dynamics. Current guidelines require employees to work at least three days in the office, including Tuesdays and Wednesdays, with the third day set by the employee and supervisor based on department needs. The IT Product Manager – Meter Technology is responsible for leading the design, development, maintenance, and continuous enhancement of technology solutions that support Meter Technology, Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) capabilities, as well as Energy Efficiency programs. This role owns the application and integration landscape supporting smart meters, head-end systems, meter data management (MDMS), field device communications, and downstream integration with Meter to Cash and grid operations.
The manager is responsible for building and maintaining strong partnerships with Meter Operations, Distribution, Customer Service, Regulatory, Energy Efficiency, and external vendors to ensure reliable, secure, and cost effective delivery of AMI-enabled business outcomes.
The incumbent will also devise and execute strategic plans to rationalize the Meter Technology application portfolio, reduce technical and operational complexity, minimize total cost of ownership, improve system resiliency and cybersecurity posture, and enhance service delivery across the AMI ecosystem.
Essential Functions
Lead staff and managed service providers through service delivery transformation supporting Meter Technology, AMI, and Energy Efficiency platforms.
Serve as the IT owner for AMI-related applications, including head-end systems, MDMS, meter analytics, and related integration layers.
Work closely with meter technology suppliers and system integrators to ensure contractual obligations, SLAs, regulatory requirements, and cybersecurity standards are met.
Maintain operational, performance, and financial metrics to demonstrate service delivery improvement, system availability, and fiscal responsibility.
Manage all deliverables associated with application operations, maintenance, support, and release management across the Meter Technology portfolio.
Oversee outsourced managed services and cloud/hosted vendor contracts supporting AMI and meter systems.
Ensure all Meter Technology applications are actively monitored for performance, data integrity, and assured operations in alignment with enterprise and monitoring standards.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with Meter Operations, Field Services, Grid Modernization, Energy Efficiency, Regulatory, and Customer organizations.
Support the transition to agile and product-based delivery models for Meter Technology initiatives.
Oversee activities across business units and IT domains to enable successful implementation and long-term support of AMI and meter-related projects.
Ensure successful delivery of major capital programs related to meter deployments, AMI upgrades, and grid modernization, including seamless transition to steady‑state operations.
Manage maintenance, vendor, and project costs for the Meter Technology portfolio.
Lead the development of application roadmaps that support AMI scalability, resiliency, regulatory compliance, and evolving business needs.
Evaluate root cause technical solutions proposed by vendors with a focus on eliminating technical debt and improving long-term platform stability.
Coordinate preparation of statements of work (SOWs), technical specifications, cost estimates, and contract negotiations related to meter technology solutions.
Negotiate and manage external vendor and contractor relationships in alignment with IT and business objectives.
Technical Knowledge, Skills & Experience
Strong technical acumen with expert understanding of software development life cycle (SDLC), system integration, data flows, and resiliency architectures.
Familiarity with utility meter technology concepts such as smart meters, meter communications networks, head‑end systems, MDMS, and data quality processes.
Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills with the ability to address complex, cross‑domain technical challenges.
Proven ability to lead and develop teams of direct reports and managed service providers through coaching and performance management.
Customer‑first mindset with a passion for delivering reliable, high‑quality technology solutions that support business operations.
Strong interpersonal, negotiation, vendor management, and business acumen skills.
Strategic thinker capable of anticipating long‑term business needs and technology evolution within the Meter Technology domain.
Ability to prioritize competing demands and manage deadlines in a fast‑paced, operationally critical environment.
Ability to translate operational and performance data into actionable improvement plans.
Excellent verbal, written, and presentation communication skills.
Recognized expertise in application or product management, with strong organizational and project management capabilities.
Education
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four‑year college or university with a focus in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a closely related field is required.
Experience
Minimum of 10 years of related IT experience, including at least 5 years in supervisory or leadership roles.
Minimum of 5 years managing outsourced IT managed service providers in a complex application environment.
Recommendation of 5 years supporting COTS and enterprise application platforms; experience supporting AMI, MDMS, or utility operations systems strongly preferred.
Working Conditions
Must be available for emergency restoration assignments as required.
Must be available to travel between MA / CT / NH as needed.
