Engineer (Advanced Forecasting and Modeling)

The Engineer will be part of the Advanced Modeling and Forecasting Team under the System Planning organization at Eversource. The Engineer will be responsible for designing, building, and maintaining the data pipelines and infrastructure that support the department’s modeling, forecasting, data analytics and data science initiatives. The incumbent should have a strong background in power system engineering, programmatic solutions and automations and should be comfortable working with large and complex datasets

Authorization to work in the United States is a precondition to employment in this position. Eversource will not sponsor candidates for work visas for this position.

Essential Functions:

  • Work with system planning, substation and transmission engineering groups to develop and support critical business solutions & projects, including defect identification, asset management, circuit patrolling, etc.
  • Design and implement scalable and efficient automation scripts, data pipelines to ingest, process, and store data from various sources.
  • Understand the grid model build process, forecasted information injection and automation potential of these processes.
  • Build and maintain data infrastructure, including databases, data lakes, and data warehouses.
  • Support and develop architecture for automated train-test-deploy on-premise and/or cloud
  • Support the development of automation around digital grid modeling and grid process automation.
  • Support the development of a probabilistic approach in grid modeling.
  • Support the development, verification and integration of AI-based models.
  • Support the development of medium (2-5 year) and long (5+ year) range distribution plans involving load relief, capacity- and asset related issues.
  • Collaborate with multiple cross-functional groups in developing a long-range planning criterion for integrating and enabling two-way communication of new technologies, including photovoltaic solar (PV), electric vehicles (EV), electric heat pumps and battery storage.
  • Familiar with cloud platforms and services (e.g. Azure, Databricks).
  • Design and develop a suite of MATLAB applications and MATLAB-based web-service applications.
  • Work with large data, performing digital signal processing operations on large data.
  • Use MATLAB to visualize large and complex data to end-users and decision makers.
  • Synthesize complex concepts and solve them with algorithms, designed in MATLAB.
  • Ability to work with SQL databases. Experience with SQL queries is required.
  • Use MATLAB to programmatically design and execute SQL queries.
  • Participate in cross functional teams to investigate, evolve, and propel all software development tools, including fundamental product architecture and infrastructure.
  • Automate and evolve processes and procedures.
  • Drive the automation of the Synergi Electric Solver inside MATLAB (COM object control in MATLAB)
  • Train and educate users in application development, testing and releasing,
  • Support project and task management in a Jira platform. Jira experience is preferred

Technical Knowledge/Skill:

  • Strong experience in software development and working with multiple MATLAB products (Web Application Server and Production server experience is required).
  • Experience in an object-oriented design and implementation.
  • Experience with server-side programming and full stack development.
  • Experience with digital signal processing methodologies (including linear system solving, data fitting, FFT operations, time series processing and results visualization in MATLAB).
  • Experience with AI-based model development and life-cycle management thereof.
  • Knowledge of the use of computer simulation techniques used in electric distribution system analysis (steady-state and dynamic) including discrete and 8760-hours simulation.
  • Knowledge of new technologies including but not limited to photovoltaic solar, electric vehicles, electric heat pumps and battery technologies.
  • Knowledge of electrical theory as applied to planning of an electric power supply system.
  • Experience with Jira project management tools.
  • Experience with SQL-based database systems and SQL queries.
  • Good written and oral communication skills, including formal presentation.
  • Excellent team skills.
  • Effective interpersonal skills, ability to develop strategic partnerships.
  • Ability to achieve desired results by setting high standards for self and others and accepts responsibility for outcomes.
  • Experience with programming/scripting languages (e.g., SQL, MATLAB, Python).
  • Work includes data entry, data manipulation, data analysis, technical writing, editing, planning, evaluating, interpreting, organizing, consulting, analyzing, designing, documenting, specifying, coordinating, implementing, and presenting.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering preferred, or related quantitative field. 
  • Advanced degree preferred.

Experience:

  • 3+ years of experience in the Utility industry field or related.
  • Strong with scripting languages such as MATLAB (preferred) and Python, or a similar language.
  • Experience with SQL and database technologies (e.g., MS SQL, PostgreSQL).
  • Experience with data storage and processing technologies (e.g., Parquet).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Understanding of technology platforms including MATLAB, MATLAB Production Server & Power BI is preferred.
  • Knowledge of or experience working with utility companies is desirable.

Working Conditions:

  • Must be available to work emergency restoration assignment as required.
  • Must be available to travel between MA/CT/NH as necessary.

$97,570.00-$108,410.00
