Distribution System Operator

As Distribution System Operator, you will plan, coordinate, and direct switching and tagging operations, issue clearances, monitor system loads, and support emergency restoration efforts for the electric distribution system. You will coordinate activities with CONVEX and other regions when system conditions cross jurisdictional lines.
Training Program
Candidates are hired as apprentices and undergo a 12–18-month training program, including written exams and board evaluations. Successful completion of the training program is required to remain in the position.
Essential Functions:
- Operate and maintain the Network Management System (NMS) and SCADA equipment.
- Write, check, approve, and issue switching, and tagging instructions.
- Analyze trouble calls and initiate corrective actions, including crew dispatch.
- Monitor circuit and substation loads and voltages to ensure safe operation.
- Support emergency restoration efforts, including Division EOCs and RMTs.
- Maintain accurate system diagrams and databases reflecting current system status.
- Coordinate switching with CONVEX and other internal/external stakeholders.
- Prepare and maintain operational records and reports.
- Assist in training new operators and support NMS instruction.
- Develop and maintain operating instructions in collaboration with Grid Management.
- Coordinate dispatching with internal teams and external agencies (e.g., police, fire, DEP).
- Subject to on-call duty.
Accountability/Authority
- Ensure/Approve accurate and safe switching/tagging instructions and issue clearances.
- Efficiently direct restoration activities, following company policies and procedures.
- Provide timely and accurate reporting.
- Maintain effective coordination with internal and external stakeholders.
- Operate SCADA and related technologies proficiently.
Qualifications
Education:
- High school diploma or the equivalent is required; associate’s degree in electrical discipline preferred.
Experience:
- Three (3) years of electrical utility experience is preferred.
- Skills & Knowledge “preferred”:
- Thorough knowledge of switching/tagging procedures and understanding of distribution system operations.
- Thorough knowledge of applicable PC-based and other technologies, with the ability to learn future technologies.
- Ability to analyze electric distribution system problems and act accordingly.
- Ability to act as customer advocate by assuring accurate and timely information is communicated on ETRs (Estimated Time of Restoration) and restoration remarks.
Testing Requirement:
- Successful candidates will be required to pass pre-employment System Operator/Power Dispatcher (SO/PD) Test.
Working Conditions:
- Ability to perform under emergency stress conditions.
- Must be available to work emergency restoration assignment as required.
- Must be able to work rotating shifts
- Must be available to travel between MA/CT/NH as necessary.
