Role and Scope of Position:An audit professional who plans, manages, and performs all functions necessary to direct and complete audits throughout all areas of the Eversource system. The position will be responsible for managing a team of auditors that will be performing audits of all aspects of ES Operations (Electric, Gas, Engineering, support functions), consulting, and investigations. Perform administrative functions that support staff development and monitor and report on overall Internal Audit activity performance. Serve as an independent, objective resource to Company management to add value and improve Eversource’s operations. Assists Eversource by bringing a systematic, disciplined approach to evaluate and improve the effectiveness of risk management, control, and governance processes. This position requires the individual to demonstrate high ethical standards.
Essential Functions:
- Coordinate and manage the performance of several audit assignments, studies, and investigations concurrently.
- Coordinate specific audit activities with external auditors, consultants, regulatory authorities, Eversource departments (Legal, Security, Insurance, etc.), and others, as necessary.
- Determine the direction/scope of proposed audit projects within an assigned audit area.
- Review and approve audit programs, specialized audit tests, techniques, statistical sampling methods, and computer assisted audit techniques required to satisfy audit objectives.
- Review and approve audit workpapers of assigned staff and other supporting documentation which supports audit conclusions to ensure the quality of audit work and accomplishment of audit objectives.
- Support staff regarding the development of audit findings. Assist with the presentation of findings and recommendations for corrective action to appropriate management personnel at closing conference meetings.
- Prepare and/or review audit reports and appropriately address questions and concerns expressed by management.
- Appraise the adequacy of management responses to audit recommendations.
- Approve project budgets and schedules. Meet with audit staff periodically to obtain progress updates and provide updates to the Vice President Internal Audit & Security, as appropriate.
- Perform and/or manage complex and confidential internal audit/consulting assignments, studies, and investigations.
- Perform and/or manage appropriate follow-up reviews to evaluate corrective actions taken to address audit recommendations.
- Prepare the Internal Audit Department 's annual risk analysis and audit plan of the Eversource system for presentation to the Vice President Internal Audit & Security and appropriate senior Company management.
- Prepare and discuss staff performance evaluations as required by Internal Audit Department or Company requirements. Performance evaluations include, as appropriate, project reviews or other interim appraisals, annual competency reviews, and goal reviews.
- Develop a professional audit staff with sufficient knowledge, skills, experience, and professional certifications to meet the Company’s audit requirements.
- Assist with preparation of the information required for Audit Committee and Compliance & Internal Controls Committee meetings.
- Promote business unit and operating company ownership of internal controls and support objective business risk management within the individual businesses and Eversource.
Technical Knowledge/Skill/Education/Licenses/Certifications:
Technical Knowledge/Skill:
- Demonstrates a thorough knowledge or high degree of proficiency in the following areas:
- Internal control systems and auditing/consulting concepts, techniques, and principles including appraisal and analysis of complex information, determining facts, assessing risk, and making decisions and recommendations accordingly.
- General computer application controls and mainframe and computer audit software applications.
- Performance and/or supervision of multiple audits, projects, or investigations simultaneously to arrive at sound conclusions while under the pressure of time constraints or sensitive situations.
- Written and oral communication skills to provide clear and concise information (including technical and/or sensitive subject matters) to all levels of Company management and counterparts in outside organizations. Also, provide effective and efficient editing of communications written by others.
- Presentation skills to communicate information based on written studies or new ideas not currently documented.
- Eversource's functional responsibilities, business systems, internal controls, pertinent policies, practices, and procedures.
- Accounting, business management, business consulting, and personnel management concepts.
- Appraisal of internal audit documentation and processes to provide appropriate improvements and changes required to comply with professional standards (such as the Institute of Internal Auditors).
Education:
- Baccalaureate degree with significant academic achievement from an accredited college or university. A business degree is preferred; however, non-business degrees (engineering, liberal arts, computer science) may be considered to provide the Internal Audit activity with a mix of perspective or equivalent experience
- Advanced degree (i.e., Master of Business Administrative - MBA) desirable
Experience:
- Minimum of ten years of related experience in auditing, business management, or a comparable environment; and a minimum of three years of experience supervising multiple projects and staff.
Licenses & Certifications:
- Certification in an auditing related discipline (Certified Internal Auditor - CIA, Certified Public Accountant - CPA, Certified Information Systems Auditor - CISA) preferred
Working Conditions:
- Must be available to work emergency storm assignment as required.
- Must be available to travel between MA/CT/NH as necessary.
