The Sustainability and Environmental Affairs Student Co‑op will support the Licensing & Permitting staff by assisting with environmental reviews and permitting support for maintenance and new construction projects across electric and gas operations.

Under the guidance of Licensing & Permitting staff, the co‑op student will gain hands‑on experience with environmental permitting, GIS mapping, regulatory coordination, and field inspections. This role offers meaningful exposure to how environmental compliance and permitting strategies support utility infrastructure projects while protecting natural resources.

Essential Functions

The Student Co‑op will support the Licensing & Permitting team with the following responsibilities:

  • Conduct environmental reviews for maintenance and new construction projects using GIS mapping tools.

  • Review mapped project areas to help determine required local, state, and federal permits and identify environmental constraints such as wetlands, flood zones, endangered species habitats, and hazardous sites or materials.

  • Assist in preparing maintenance notification letters to support clear communication with regulatory agencies regarding project scope and activities.

  • Support permitting strategy development and regulatory compliance efforts for electric and gas operations.

  • Conduct field work, including site visits to substations, construction sites, and company rights‑of‑way, as needed.

  • Assist with site inspections, environmental compliance observations, and protection of surrounding resource areas.

  • Collect soil or water samples for site pre‑characterization, when required.

  • Support construction compliance inspections to ensure adherence to permits, mitigation requirements, and company Best Management Practices (BMPs).

  • Assist in coordinating and overseeing outside environmental consultants, as directed.

  • Collaborate with Sustainability & Environmental Affairs staff, as well as Engineering and Operations teams, while maintaining attention to cost and schedule considerations.

Qualifications

  • Interest in environmental permitting, sustainability, environmental compliance, or infrastructure projects

  • Ability to interpret maps, environmental data, and project information

  • Possess functional skills with computer software including MS Word; MS EXCEL; MS Power Point, Adobe; and ESRI GIS products.

  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills

  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with cross‑functional teams

  • Willingness to conduct field work and visit active construction and operational sites

  • Valid driver’s license and access to a personally owned vehicle to support site inspections, as required

Education

  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s degree program

  • At least a second‑year student

  • Major in one of the following or a related discipline:

    • Environmental Science

    • Environmental Engineering

    • Engineering

    • Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

Additional Information

  • Primary work location is Westwood, MA

  • This is a 6-month, 40 hours a week, co-op and the student should be able to support this schedule.

  • Co‑op students will also travel to area stations, construction sites, and rights‑of‑way

  • Hands‑on exposure to environmental permitting within a regulated utility environment

  • Opportunity to develop practical field, GIS, and regulatory experience

Interns are paid through our Managed Service Provider Program and are not employees of Eversource.  Payrates are hourly and based on year of graduation and if the role is technical or non-technical. Technical rates start at $20.60 freshman and up to $27.38 for a senior.
