Locations: South Hooksett, New Hampshire

As a Field Engineering / Field Communications Intern, you’ll gain hands-on experience supporting the technology that helps keep the electric power system operating safely and reliably across New Hampshire. You’ll work alongside experienced engineers and field teams to help monitor, protect, and control transmission and distribution systems using advanced communication and automation technology.

This internship is ideal for students interested in power systems, electronics, communications, automation, and field-based engineering work.

Responsibilities: 

    • Assisting with the design, programming, testing, installation, and troubleshooting of electronic and electromechanical systems used in substations and the electric grid

    • Supporting SCADA, communication, and automation systems that monitor and control the power network

    • Helping research and learn about industry technologies and standards, including IEC 61850

    • Assisting with diagnosing and repairing electrical and software-based equipment issues

    • Identifying common equipment problems and helping propose solutions or corrective actions

    • Participating in evaluations and research of new technologies, systems, and test equipment

    • Helping maintain databases, programs, and remote communication tools used for substation equipment (IEDs)

    • Supporting project teams by assisting field crews, following procedures, and helping with on-site troubleshooting

    • Gaining exposure to reliability and cybersecurity standards used in the energy industry (NERC & CIP)

Education:

An Associate’s degree in electrical technology, electrical power system technology, electrical control systems, telecommunication technology, electrical engineering, electronic engineering, or electronics. Students pursuing BSEE or BSET degree are encouraged to apply.

Working Conditions:

  • Work is primarily hands-on and field-based, under the guidance of experienced engineers and technicians

  • Activities may include installing, testing, and maintaining protective relays, SCADA systems, and telecommunications equipment

  • You’ll gain experience reading electrical/electronic drawings and equipment manuals

  • Use of computers, diagnostic tools, and testing equipment will be part of your day-to-day work

  • Tasks may involve working with hand and power tools and climbing ladders or working from elevated positions

  • Travel throughout the Eversource New Hampshire service territory is required

Must possess and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator’s license.

Interns are paid through our Managed Service Provider Program and are not employees of Eversource.  Payrates are hourly and based on year of graduation and if the role is technical or non-technical.  Technical rates start at $20.60 freshman and up to $27.38 for a senior.
