The Substation Operations Intern will gain hands on exposure to electrical transmission and substation operations while working alongside experienced electrical professionals. This internship is designed to provide students with practical field experience, technical skill development, and insight into careers in electrical utility operations.
The intern will support day to day activities in a supervised, learning focused environment and will not be expected to perform independent journey level work. Throughout the summer, interns will have the opportunity to:
• Gain real world exposure to electrical transmission and substation operations
• Learn industry standard safety practices and procedures
• Develop foundational technical skills related to electrical systems and equipment
• Build communication, teamwork, and problem solving skills
• Explore potential full time career pathways within electric operations and energy delivery
Responsibilities
Under direct supervision, you may assist with:
• Supporting the installation, maintenance, and inspection of electrical transmission and substation equipment across multiple voltage classes
• Assisting with electrical components such as transformers, metering equipment, station service equipment, bus work, switchboards, control systems, and remote control equipment
• Observing and assisting with basic troubleshooting, operational analysis, and repair activities related to electrical, electronic, and electromechanical equipment
• Learning to read and interpret electrical drawings, schematics, and work instructions
• Assisting with the use of hand tools, power tools, and electrical testing equipment in accordance with safety guidelines
• Supporting field operations, including work from elevated positions and in confined spaces, as appropriate for training and safety requirements
• Participating in safety briefings, job shadowing, training sessions, and team meetings
• Completing administrative or project based tasks as assigned
Qualifications
• Currently enrolled in an Associate degree in Industrial Electricity, Electrical Engineering, Electrical/Electronic Engineering Technology, or a related field
• Interest in electrical transmission, utility operations, or energy infrastructure
• Ability to follow instructions and work safely in a team based environment, Ability to perform outdoor work during the summer months in varying weather conditions
• Must be able to meet safety and site access requirements for utility facilities
• Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
