Role and Scope of Position:
This is an intermediate level position requiring experience; responsible for handling assignments in support of Eversource’s wireless telecommunications operations. Handles assignments, with limited supervision, associated with planning and performing installation, acceptance testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of wireless telecommunication systems. Provides wireless communication support, guidance and advice to customers including but not limited to technical services, engineering, information technology, electrical system operations, control and dispatch centers, customer service, field communications, emergency preparedness as well as emergency response tactical trailers and Mobile Response Center (MRC) vehicles, etc. Participates in various projects to continually improve and upgrade telecommunications wireless infrastructure. Eversource’s wireless communications systems are composed of but not limited to, analog and digital communication systems, dispatch console systems, voice and data radio systems, WAN, and associated peripheral equipment. Technologies including but not limited to radio frequency modulation, antenna systems, radio wave propagation, ethernet, IP, T1, serial communications, carrier ethernet, phone and satellite communications systems.
The salary range for this position starts at Step 1 $49.32 and progresses in accordance with the union contract.
Essential Functions:
Performs the duties outlined in the Job Description for Technician, Wireless along with the following duties:
- May create and modify system one-line drawings for wireless communication systems.
- Constructs electrical or electronic circuitry to develop specialized functions or tests; designs, recommends and /or installs modifications to electrical or electronic systems or devices.
- Assists with the development and writing of operating procedures, scripts and test documents to guide users of electronic equipment and/or wireless communication systems.
- Where applicable, enhances and upgrades the electronic/wireless communications systems.
- Provides technical experience, collaboration, advice, and support including but not limited to engineering, construction, and tests as required. May be asked to provide remote support and attend meetings to collaborate with other departments.
- Assists with the maintenance of various systems, web pages and/or databases.
- Identifies and provides advice on the need for major repairs or outside technical assistance.
- Creates database configurations for programmable electronic devices and systems.
- Supports training and development of junior personnel, assists with training and educating other personnel, including but not limited to field communications, test, electricians, engineering, technical training, vendors, and contractors.
- Other related duties as assigned.
- Must be available for on-call hours and during emergency restoration as required.
Technical Knowledge/Skill/Education/Licenses/Certifications:
Technical Knowledge/Skill:
- Thorough technical understanding of radio frequency theory & principles, electrical and electronic components, circuitry, and systems, and ability to maintain up-to-date knowledge of state-of-the-art developments in these fields.
- Skill and dexterity in repair, adjustment, and modification of coaxial cables, connectors, electronics, microelectronics, and delicate electromechanical components, circuitry, and systems.
- Knowledge of specialized instrumentation, use, and application; thorough working knowledge of electrical and electronic testing and measurement techniques.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to effectively communicate technical information.
- Familiarity with pertinent regulatory requirements.
- Knowledge of lock out tag out, switching and tagging procedures.
- Full understanding of Eversource safety rules and practices.
- Thorough knowledge of computer systems and applicable software.
Education:
- Associate degree in one of the following disciplines with prior related experience as described below:
- Electrical Engineering or Technology
- Computer Science, Computer Science Engineering, or Computer Engineering
- Computer or Information Technology
- High school diploma or equivalent with prior related experience as described below:
Experience:
- With associate degree as described above, four (4) years of prior related telecommunications system experience with Eversource’s current network technologies, performing engineering, installation, maintenance, or repair in a utility, industry or military field is required.
- With high school diploma as described above, six (6) years of prior related telecommunications system experience with Eversource’s current network technologies, performing engineering, installation, maintenance, or repair in a utility, industry or military field is required.
Licenses & Certifications:
- Critical Infrastructure Protection certification must be maintained annually.
- Must maintain a valid motor vehicle operator’s license.
Working Conditions:
- Must be available to work emergency restoration assignments as required.
- Lifting of equipment with weights up to 40 pounds.
- Must be physically able to walk/hike steep or challenging terrain for up to one mile.
- Must be available to travel between MA/CT/NH as necessary.
Mental Aspects:
- Must be able to work alone, in tight quarters, small rooms, noisy environments, and at remote locations.
