Supervisor, Substation Design and Drafting

Role and Scope of Position: This position has the responsibility for planning, coordinating and supervising activities related to the design and drafting of engineering drawing deliverables associated with new transmission & distribution substations, and the modification and expansion of existing distribution substations.  Supervises the work activities of Designer personnel assigned to the Station Design Engineering department unit. Ensures projects undertaken are in accordance with Eversource Design and Application Standards and ensures that the design work of the Substation Design Unit is in compliance with safety, budget and schedule requirements

Essential Functions: 

  • Supervises, coaches, develops and reviews performance of Design and Drafting staff.  Supervises, assigns, prioritizes and directs work performed by the Designer and/or Drafting staff.
  • Oversees outside CAD Consultants to implement automated CAD features for improved drawings and drawing development.
  • Leads advancements in standardization and development of AutoCAD tools to enhance and improve productivity of the Station Design staff across operating companies.
  • Develops detailed electrical design criteria for specific design projects in conjunction with substation project engineering.
  • Oversees the application of established design standards, procedures and criteria. 
  • Supervises the preparation of or prepares detailed schedules and man-day estimates for assigned substation design projects.
  • Supervises the development of designs deliverables for potential substation projects.
  • Supervises the development of designs and drawings for additions or modifications to existing transmission, bulk supply and distribution substations.
  • Supervises the development of design sketches of yard and equipment layouts, wiring and interconnection diagrams, grounding, and other schemes for substation additions or modifications.
  • Supervises the preparation of purchase requisitions for materials and equipment required for substation projects.
  • Provides direction to and evaluates the performance of outside contractors and vendors providing substation design services.
  • Works with other system areas in the planning, project management, coordination and monitoring of schedule and design deliverable requirements.
  • Ensures technical data is made available to appropriate personnel for feasibility studies involving new or modified substation projects.
  • Actively supports storm and/or emergency restoration assignments.
  • Manages the resources and assignments as necessary to prioritize completion of as-built drawings to minimize the as-built drawing back log.
  • Support Document Control, and the and drawing configuration control processes including use of the Adept Document Control software to ensure configuration control of substation record drawings.

Technical Knowledge/Skill/Education/Licenses/Certifications:

Technical Knowledge/Skills:   Working familiarity with AutoCAD tools & drafting techniques.  Knowledge of the Design and Drafting standards and design deliverable requirements as they relate to the project life cycle process in support of substation construction projects. Working familiarity with the ADEPT library and associated document control methods. Appropriate interpersonal styles and methods to inspire and guide employees, with the ability to modify employee behavior to accommodate tasks, situations and unforeseen priorities. Ability to multi-task.

Education:   Requires an Associate Degree in Electrical Engineering. A Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering is desirable. Other Engineering disciplines will be considered. In circumstances where an applicant does not have the requisite academic background, consideration may be given to demonstrated experience and leadership qualities within the design drafting discipline.

Experiences:  Minimum of eight (8) years of direct engineering or design experience in substations, Distribution and/or transmission engineering or operations.
