Assists in the remote operation of natural gas distribution systems within their assigned area of responsibility (AOR). This entry-level supervisor position utilizes the SCADA system with oversight from the Gas Control System Supervisor to monitor and control gas facilities by remotely operating regulators and valves to ensure pressures are maintained as high as possible without exceeding Maximum Allowable Operating Pressure (MAOP). These activities provide for a safe and reliable supply of natural gas to customers by operating the distribution systems within the limits of applicable Federal, State, and Company codes.

Essential Functions: 

Complete Gas Control training program for remote operation of the three Eversource gas distribution systems, department, and company policy/procedures, and to gain the required knowledge, experience, and competence to qualify on the three areas of responsibility. Assists the on-shift System Supervisor in their day-to-day roles as the system owner. Responsible for providing oversight and work authorizations under the general supervision of the on-shift Gas Control System Supervisor. These duties are performed with personal accountability and system responsibility under the Eversource Control Room Management (CRM) plan 49 CFR 192.631. Position responsibilities include:

  • Remote monitoring and operating the gas distribution system within prescribed limits.
  • Must become and remain a “Qualified Operator” as prescribed by the Department of Transportation Operator Qualification requirement, the Company’s Control Room Management Plan.
  • Acknowledges SCADA Alarms and take appropriate actions to mitigate.
  • Identifies and responds to Abnormal Operating Conditions (AOC’s).
  • Reports Abnormal Operating Conditions to appropriate personnel in accordance with CRM.
  • Reviews all reports and logs provided by the SCADA system.
  • Provides 24/7 authorization for planned and unplanned work.
  • System authority under normal, abnormal, and emergency operations.
  • Directs personnel to respond and acts on SCADA alarms.
  • Directs personnel to make system changes.
  • Directs LNG Plant personnel to cool down, send out, and secure the vaporization process.
  • Dispatches LNG supplies to meet Gas Supply forecasts or to maintain safe system pressure.
  • Remotely operates LPG plants to meet Gas Supply forecasts or to maintain safe system pressure.
  • Coordinates LNG and LPG maintenance activity that could impact system operations.
  • Monitors gas supply imbalance of nominations relative to customer demand.
  • Advises Gas Supply department of our imbalance position of customer demand against gas nominations.
  • Coordinates with Transmission Company work impact at shared facilities and potential work impacts.
  • Logs AOC responses, actions, and mitigations in electronic logbook and performs shift turnover per CRM requirements.
  • Coordinates Gas Control emergency and AOC response activity with appropriate personnel.
  • Executes the Gas Curtailment plan for no notice events.
  • Coordinates Electric Circuit re-energization for critical circuits impacting gas pressure systems.
  • Ensures field personnel are following CRM based procedures to include point-to-point verifications, three-part communication, and response to system alarms.
  • Contacts after hour support personnel to include, but not limited to I&R, SCADA, IT, LNG, LPG, Gas System Planning, Eversource Telecommunication departments, and outside Telecommunication Companies.
  • Provides shift coverage for planned and unplanned (no notice) vacancies as required to maintain business continuity.
  • Works assigned IMT Roles as required during events.
  • Participates in the Company’s Performance Review Program.
  • Participates in department meetings and trainings when off shift as necessary.
  • Participates in field training opportunities for respective Operating Companies.
  • Performs other business required and administrative tasks as require

Qualifications:

  • Ability to understand mechanical concepts and use abstract reasoning.
  • Knowledge and understanding of pressure and fluid dynamics.
  • Basic experience and knowledge of SCADA, DCS, PLC, and HMI is preferred.
  • Computer and Mathematical proficiency required
  • Must be a self-starter with effective communication skills, including active listening, speaking, and writing skills 
  • Ability to investigate and solve problems, analyze data, and write effective reports
  • Thorough knowledge or experience with MS Excel and MS Office

Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent Military or work experience

Experience:                          

  • Three to five (3-5) years related experience. Previous operations or utility experience is preferred.

Working Conditions:

  • Must be available to work emergency restoration assignment as required.
  • Must be available to travel between MA/CT/NH as necessary.
  • 12-hour rotating shifts that include nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Work is performed primarily in an office environment which involves sitting, standing, working on a PC, and general movement throughout the office area.
  • The Gas Control Supervisor Trainee may be called upon to provide incremental shift coverage including but not limited to 12-hour rotating shifts which includes nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must be responsive to incremental shift coverage requests on a 7 day by 24-hour basis.
  • Candidates must acknowledge that they can meet the requirement of having off-duty time sufficient to achieve eight (8) hours of continuous sleep between shifts and that failure to meet this requirement will result in their disqualification from being considered for this position
  • This position is subject to the DOT random drug testing program
  • This position is categorized as safety-sensitive for the purpose of drug testing. Successful applicants shall be subject to a pre-assignment drug test if the individual is currently in a non-safety sensitive position. As an employee in this position the individual shall be subject to random drug testing. A positive drug test will result in disciplinary action.
