This position is responsible for the planning, coordinating and management of all activities related to the engineering and design of new Transmission and Distribution (T&D) substations and the modification and expansion of existing substations in the applicable service territory. Responsible managing a team of Electrical and Civil Engineers, Designers, and Drafters. Provides management of the work of the Substation Engineering & Design group, their associated work processes, and design deliverables to ensure compliance with safety, budget, and schedule requirements as necessary to support company objectives. Additional functions under the direct management of this position include project services (work order writing material ordering), project cost estimation, technical specification for engineering services and substation equipment, development of substation standards, underground civil distribution system design. Responsible for the engineering and design content of drawings detailing equipment and reflecting field changes.

This is a hybrid role.  The first three months are fulltime in the office.

Essential Functions: 

  • Plans, coordinates and manages the work activities of personnel assigned to the Substation Engineering and Design group
  • Manages the development of engineering and design strategies, substation engineering design criteria, and equipment specifications for T&D substation systems.
  • Manages the evaluation of proposed or existing methods, procedures, and new technologies relative to engineering, control and design of substation systems.
  • Represents Eversource before Federal, State and Local regulatory bodies and courts of law involving substation engineering and design matters.
  • Manages the preparation of regulatory approvals for T&D substations.
  • Manages the development of the substation project engineering and design process, and maintenance of engineering, design, construction, equipment, and material specifications, standards, procedures, and guidelines for substation engineering, equipment, and materials.
  • Manages the process that provides overall substation project direction and coordination of all disciplines from the start in Engineering through Construction until acceptance by the end users.
  • Participates in various state, regional and national organizations involved in standardization of electric T&D substation materials & equipment, specifications and construction designs (e.g., ANSI, IEEE, EPRI).
  • Provides design specifications and engineering standards for new and existing T&D substations.
  • Responsible for engineering and design content of all substation drawings.  Ensures that drawings are up-to-date and modified to reflect changes in the field.
  • Assists with the annual plan and budget for substation operation and maintenance in collaboration with Electric Operations.  Adjusts the plans, as needed, through incorporation of the results of root cause analyses and system changes.
  • Collaborates with other managers within Engineering on life cycle, risk analysis, reliability reporting and planning and response to major events.
  • Oversees the management and development of area staff.  Implements programs to ensure employees possess technical and behavioral skills required to support operating plans.  Manages, selects, coaches and develops area staff.
  • Manages the staff by establishing and monitoring staff goals, policies, plans, programs, performance objectives and budget.  Analyzes and recommends resource levels to plan, develop and implement programs and policies.  Aligns department goals to meet corporate objectives. 
  • Actively supports safety first culture as well as storm and /or emergency restoration assignments

Technical Knowledge/Skill/Education/Licenses/Certifications:

  • Requires a thorough knowledge of T&D substation design engineering and operations support, managing operating budgets and operating plans and working cross functionally Appropriate interpersonal styles and methods to inspire and guide employees toward goal achievement. 
  • Ability to modify employee behavior to accommodate tasks, situations and unforeseen priorities. 
  • Ability to multi-task.
  • Thorough knowledge of applicable work practices, procedures and safety requirements, along with HR management and business planning skills. 
  • Detailed knowledge of technical aspects and business principles.

Education:

  • Requires a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering or related Engineering discipline.
  • Master’s Degree in Engineering or MBA preferred .

Experience:        

  • Ten years related experience in engineering in substations, distribution and/or transmission engineering or operations.
  • Minimum of ten (10) years in related activities, including previous leadership (managerial or supervisory) experience.

​​Compensation and Benefits:

Eversource offers a competitive total rewards program.  The annual salary range for this position is $153,140.00 to $170,000.00, plus incentive.  Salary is commensurate with your experience.  Check out the career site for an overview of our benefits.

Licenses & Certifications:

  • A Professional Engineer (PE) license in New Hampshire is strongly preferred.

Working Conditions:

  • Must be available to work emergency restoration assignment as required.
  • Must be available to travel between MA/CT/NH as necessary.
