Director, Environmental Affairs

Role and Scope of Position:
Responsible for developing and implementing strategic and compliance initiatives for the Company’s environmental work across the three-state territory (CT, MA, NH). Develop and execute strategic initiatives that advance the Company’s reputation and performance as a clean energy, climate and sustainability leader. The Director develops and oversees climate and greenhouse initiatives to drive Company performance. The Director works with operations and other groups across the Company to ensure that work being performed strictly follows environmental rules and strong relationships are fostered with environmental regulators.

JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY:

The Environmental Affairs Director is responsible for developing and implementing strategic and compliance initiatives for the Company’s environmental work across the three-state territory (CT, MA, NH). The Director is responsible for developing and executing strategic initiatives that advance the Company’s reputation and performance as a clean energy, climate and sustainability leader.  The Director develops and oversees climate and greenhouse initiatives to drive Company performance. The Director works with operations and other groups across the Company to ensure that work being performed strictly follows environmental rules and strong relationships are fostered with environmental regulators.

  • Manages a group of approximately 60 environmental professionals responsible for all areas of corporate environmental work.
  • Oversees leading corporate sustainability and greenhouse gas reduction strategies, driving performance and communicating the Company’s sustainability commitments, efforts and accomplishments.
  • Oversees gas and electric transmission project permitting, including for offshore wind, energy storage, electric vehicle, and other clean energy projects.
  • Oversees remediation of contaminated sites clean-up where the Company has liability, including former Manufactured Gas Plant (MGP) sites.
  • Oversees spill response field work, including ensuring emergency response environmental preparedness during significant storm events.
  • Works with other areas of the Company to ensure regulatory compliance in all environmental areas, including at Company facilities.
  • Works with operational areas to promote environmental stewardship, including following avian protection best practices.
  • Directs and oversees the development and implementation of environmental policies, programs, projects, studies and tasks to communicate environmental requirements to all areas of the Company and ensure compliance
  • Responsible for decision making regarding budget, program implementation, negotiation strategies and, in certain areas, regulatory interpretation and interfacing with regulatory officials.
  • Develops area budget necessary to implement policies, programs and initiatives.
  • Communicates internally and externally on Company initiatives and compliance priorities.

Qualifications:

Technical Knowledge/Skills:    Requires broad-based knowledge of utility industry and corporate business.  Also requires good organizational, management and excellent presentation and communication skills.

Education:                                 Requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental or other science, Engineering or related discipline.  Advanced degree preferred.

Experiences                            Minimum of twelve (12) years experience in all aspects of environmental requirements as related to the corporate business including eight (8) years of management experience.
